Plans are more like guidelines.

When I was working with a coach last year, we talked about goals...what I wanted out of life.

I could want ANYTHING.

Million-dollar home on the lake. Done.

Alpaca farm. Done.

Be a successful fashion designer. Done.

But the deal was, I couldn’t get stuck in the “how.” You know, HOW am I going to afford a million-dollar lake home?!

I had to let go of figuring out the how and just be with the goal.

She told me achieving my goals was kind of like sailing. You have a destination...a goal. But when you sail, you typically don’t sail in a straight line. It’s not a linear journey. The plan of how to achieve my goals would fluctuate over time--I may even feel like I’m going backwards at some point--but the destination would always remain the same.

Knowing nothing about sailing, I took her word for this.

When we set out this morning, we had the goal of taking a beautiful sunrise picture. Our plan of how we were going to do this involved traveling all the way to Grand Lake. But that didn’t happen.

We stopped here instead...

...altering the plan…

...but still achieving our goal.
